Voice Memos for webOS

Our latest mobile application for the HP webOS mobile platform is quite the app: Voice Memos for webOS.

Among the achievements would be that this is the very first app in the Catalog to use the new Microphone APIs in webOS 2.0. Also, this is the first app that will be using any of the new webOS 2.0 features (with the exception of Just Type features, which our own Gamer Friends for PSN app supports).

And to list a few basic features:

  • Record new memos being able to enter titles and descriptions
  • Viewing and playing the memos
  • Editing the title and description of the memos
  • Deleting memos (and it deletes the file from the device using a custom node.js-based service)

Some more advanced features:

  • After you open the view scene (by tapping on a memo), you can continue sifting through your memos by swiping left or right (it uses the cards metaphor so heavily employed in webOS)
  • Sorting of memos from the main scene, simply by tapping on the sort command menu button
  • Emailing of memos from the view memo scene
  • Styling of the app (currently supports Palm Default and Palm Dark, more to come in the future)
  • Ability to choose to play memos in the app or in the Palm-build media streaming/playing app
  • Ability to automatically start recording as soon as you tap the “Record New Voice Memo” or “+” buttons on the main scene, as opposed to having to manually tap the start button on the new memo scene
  • Highly customizable, from multiple themes to displaying various elements on the screen

Development of the app started in December, and it was tested on a Palm Pre 2 running webOS 2.0.1.

On Monday, 27th December, an advanced copy of the app was sent to Pre|Central‘s Dieter Bohn. Pre|Central’s Adam Marks reviewed the app for Pre|Central, and provided a few suggestions while previewing the app. On 28th January, the app went live in the Palm App Catalog. Pre|Central published their take on the app the same day.

So, to wrap up. The app costs $1.99. It is a highly requested app and it definitely provides a top notch experience. There will be improvements to the app, based on what the (hopefully) many users request. Also, for the first week, the app will be on sale for just $1.49. It will also be discounted again when webOS 2.0 goes live on the older generation devices (Pre, Pixi, and their plus variants). So buy it now! Remember, it requires webOS 2.0. You can still buy it now so you know you’ll have it ready when webOS 2.0 becomes available for your device, but the app will display a simple warning screen letting you know your device cannot support it yet.

And to continue our support of our military personnel, we will be donating 20% of all post-Palm revenue share revenue (which amounts to about 14% of the total revenue) to organizations benefiting military personnel or their families.

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: I HAPPEN TO BE ONE OF THOSE WEBOS ENTHUSIASTS WHO BELieVES IN SUPPORTING DEVELOPERS FINANCIALLY BY PURCHASING THEIR APPS. I HAVE PURCHASED YOUR APP TITLED: VOICE MEMOS AND ALTHOUGH A COUPLE MILLION OF US ARE STILL USING VERSION 1.4.5 WE PURCHASED YOUR APP UNDER THE PROSPECT OF HEWLETT PACKARD KEEPING THEIR PROMISE TO US SPRINT PALM PRE OWNERS THAT 2.0.1 WAS SHORTLY GOING TO BE RELEASED AS AN OVER THE AIR UPDATE, WE WEBOS SUPPORTERS AND ENTHUSIASTS WERE TOLD YESTERDAY BY HEWLETT PACKARD THAT 2.0.1 WILL NOT EVER BE RELEASED TO PALM PRE’S ALONG WITH ANY FUTURE OVER THE AIR UPDATES IN THE LONG AND SHORT TERM. DO YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR PEOPLE LIKE MYSELF WHO HAVE ALREADY PURCHASED YOUR APP PRIOR TO H/P PULLING THE RUG OUT FROM UNDER BOTH YOU AND US….BEST REGARDS, JEFFREY A. NOLAN

      Jeffrey,

I am in the process of sending you an email right now about this. Believe me, I had been under the impression that webOS 2.x would be going to older hardware. Had I known that was not the case, I would not have released Voice Memos into the App Catalog until I could set webOS 2.0.0 as the minimum required version. It was not ideal setting it to 1.4.5, but had I known ahead of time, I would not have released it. I am upset about this as well. I would love webOS 2.x on my development devices, and I would love the extra customer base.

I will try to work things out with you, but without any knowledge of what HP is planning to do for users of older hardware, it is quite tough. Also, there is no way for me to verify that you purchased Voice Memos (I will explain in the email), nor is there a way for me to refund your money.
